What Is Acupuncture?

More Than A Needle

Acupuncture involves the careful placement of extremely thin needles into various areas of the body, especially along the acupuncture points on the meridians. The meridians, which correspond to specific organs, can be seen as flows of energy going back and forth from the torso to the extremities. The points along these meridians can be viewed as energetic gateways where the meridian can be accessed. When there is an organ imbalance, there are changes in the acupuncture points. Manifestations of an imbalance of the meridian may not directly be noticed at these points, but they are commonly seen with tenderness or pain upon palpation, edema, or gummy knots underneath the skin. Acupuncture achieves its effect by stimulating these areas and thus the functions of the channels and their related organs are regulated or harmonized.

Although in America acupuncture is most widely known for its treatment for pain, in which it is very effective, there is actually an extensive scope of indications. These include many types of internal disorders and physical problems. Please see our page When Can Acupuncture Help.
